In case you didn't know, I like collecting things. Even if they are only on the internet. I like having a list and checking off every thing I did. Which is why Lifescouts badges speak to me.
Lifescouts is a badge-collecting community of people who share real-world experiences online. Its main goal is to encourage people to get out and do things worth remembering. Creator and YouTuber Alex Day explains it a lot better than I can in this video.
These badges and more can be found at lifescouts.com. How many do you have?
ChessMy dad is really into chess, so much so that he has books of maneuvers filling up his bookshelves. Eager to understand what all these books were about, I asked him to teach me how to play chess one day. Of course, I could never beat him. I could never master planning a move three steps ahead. So I, instead, taught my cousins to play in hopes that I could win. And I did. Every time.
Drive-In MovieIn summer 2008, I went to a drive-in movie with my mom and sister. As soon as the sun had barely dipped below the horizon, the movie began to start. That night was a double-feature: You, Me, & Dupree and Iron Man. It was so cool sitting in the car watching the movie on the giant screen as sound piped in through the car radio. There was even the cool refreshments ad with dancing hot dogs! Definitely a unique experience that I would do again if I could find a drive-in nearby.
Horseback RidingAs a Girl Scout, my troop spent a few days in the summer at a horse riding camp. As a 10 year old girl, it had always been my dream to ride a horse. But I had not realized how awkward and painful it could be. We trotted along trails in the woods and for the more adventurous souls, the instructor let the horses gallop. I might have developed my fear for speed here. Regardless, I had a great time and I haven't been on a horse ever since.
DrivingI have driven plenty of times in the 6+ years of getting behind the wheel of a car. At first, it was terrifying. I remember my first time taking my foot off the brake in the parking lot of Target and just freaking out that the car was moving so fast. It definitely took a while for me to get my license. Still trying to perfect some of my driving skills like parallel parking, merging onto highways, turning left, driving in reverse, driving with other cars on the road, and not panicking in general. But current Liz has come so far from where 16 year old Liz started.
![]() | Empire State BuildingI was in New York City for some business and when that finished early, I decided to be a tourist. I'm fairly sure I've been to the top of the Empire State Building before, but I couldn't remember any of them specifically. I didn't realize how many lines would be involved in making it to the observatory deck. After what felt like hours on line, I finally made it up to the 86th floor observatory deck. And it was beeeeeeautiful. The sun was shining, there was a light breeze, not too hot, not too cold. And it was packed full of people from said lines. So it felt like looking for a parking spot at the mall around Christmas. I swooped in whenever I saw an opening. |
