End of Aubergine August 2012

Well another August is over. I definitely think this was an improvement on last year. I didn't hit my breaking point 12 days in. I kept up with posting photos despite the increased difficulty with no internet. I'm really proud of myself for sticking with it. It is the little victories that matter.

Will I do it again? Hell yeah! Who knows what new purple outfits I'll have by then?

Last fall, my friend AC and I brainstormed a list of other possible months.
  1. Jet-Black January
  2. Fe-blue-ary
  3. AquaMarchrine
  4. Apricot April
  5. Mauve May
  6. Juniper June
  7. Jewel-Tone July
  8. Aubergine August
  9. Scarlet September
  10. Ochre October
  11. Neon November
  12. Yellow Yuletide
There's no way I could possibly do all of these months. But perhaps in between Augusts, I'll have a couple of days and celebrate the other colors in the rainbow.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 31

The last day of another successful Aubergine August. I really wanted to go out with a bang this time so I wore as much purple as I possibly could. How much purple, you ask?
  • Lavender thistle jeans
  • Purple knee-high socks
  • Grapevine Converse
  • Purple plaid underwear (not pictured, pervs)
  • Teal/purple plaid shirt
  • a secret layer of my purple/light blue striped shirt
  • purple nailpolish
I felt like I was an advertisement for the color purple (not the movie). I had expected coworkers to point out my purpleness, but they overlooked it just as they had all month. I did get one comment "Oh! Nice purple jeans."

But now, it is time to wear other colors. So long purple, see you in a week or so when I run out of other colored clothes to wear. I look forward to wearing you on a not-daily basis.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 30

Orientation hell week is over! Tonight I went out celebrating a friend's birthday and here's the metro ride back. Another appearance of the business camouflage shirt.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 28

Day 2 of orientations at work. Definitely kicking it up a notch with my new purple dress I bought a couple weeks ago. And in honor of the Pretty Little Liars summer finale (#thebetrAyal), here is my best "got a secret, can you keep it, swear this one you'll save" pose from the opening credits

Aubergine August 2012: Day 27

I've got a busy week of work ahead of me. I'm leading a few orientation sessions at work meaning I have to look put-together and somewhat presentable. Well, I'm just happy that day 1 is over.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 23

Three-peat! I really love wearing this shirt at work. Deal with it. Also, what lovely fluorescent lighting we have in today's photo.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 22

I wonder how observant my coworkers are. I mean, you think people you see on a daily basis would notice that you have worn the same color every day of the work week. Perhaps they have noticed but are too polite to mention it.  Though I'm going back to the idea that maybe they don't see it. For example: I couldn't tell what colors or outfits they wore today or yesterday. Memory is an interesting thing.

Anyway, my outfit for today is a simple purple T-shirt with a grey sweater to tone it down a bit.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 21

This one is called "Liz didn't know it was going to rain today so she didn't bring an umbrella."  I need to invest in a good (possibly purple) umbrella. And no, the shirt is not grey. It is a fine purple and white check that apparently photographs in a sickly grey color, especially when soaked.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 19

Another lazy Sunday. I spent a solid 5 minutes making silly faces in my mirror for this photo. All you're gonna get is this one, where I look sort of creepy and have a weird side braid going on.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 18

Off to enjoy a baseball game with my aunt and uncle who are visiting this weekend. Despite our differences in baseball teams, we can still get together for a photo.

At a Nationals game with the aunt and uncle.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 14

Dressing business casual is what really makes Aubergine August difficult. I only have a handful of work appropriate tops and bottoms. So it's impossible for me to have non-repeating outfits in a month. Today I'm bring back the purple fake business camouflage top with pants this time. Oh la la. Add a dash of jewelry to make it a little special.

Reading: An Abundance of Katherines by John Green

As of late I have become fascinated obsessed with the vlogbrothers John and Hank Green. And John Green has received a lot of attention this past year for his writing. In NPR's Best YA Novel poll, 5 of his books appeared in the top 100.

Wanting to ease into his works, I was guided to An Abundance of Katherines by a friend and fellow nerdfighter (thanks!). I can see why this was a great book for me to start off with. NPR's list sums it up best:

Always being dumped by girls named Katherine, Colin Singleton, a washed-up child prodigy with a Judge Judy-obsessed best friend, embarks on a quest to prove The Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability, which will affect all of his future relationships and change his life.

I found Colin to be annoying, which, I guess, should be expected since he questions why he has only one friend and if no one likes him. On top of this, Hassan was equally as annoying to me. He constantly shot down what Colin said as "not interesting." I might be taking offense to this because I wanted to hear more odd knowledge about the Archduke Franz Ferdinand or the pupillary sphincter. Which is why I absolutely LOVED the use of footnotes in the novel. They really helped put you in Colin's mindset and made up for his whining in the beginning. Even the appendix full of the math behind the Theorem of Underlying Katherine Predictability was fascinating for those who admittedly don't like math.2

Though technically not part of the novel, some of my favorite parts were the "about the author" page and the short Q&A included at the end. I find John Green so charming and have watched enough of his videos that I could actually hear his voice saying those things.

What really resonated with me was the following passage: "I'm full of shit. I'm never myself... I'm nothing. The thing about chameleoning your way through life is that it gets to where nothing is real... I'm what I need to be at any moment to stay above the ground but below the radar. The only sentence that begins with 'I' that's true of me is I'm full of shit."3

It feels like he manages to put into words exactly what I've been feeling. Although there is no clear-cut solution to this "who am I?" feeling (if there really can be a solution to this feeling or whether there needs to be one), the mere presence of this is comforting to know that you're not alone in feeling it. Even if that other person is a fictional character.

Having finished this one, I feel invigorated to read more of his books.6 It wasn't the story I was expecting based on the back cover, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. The ending gave me a The Perks of Being a Wallflower7 feel, which I consider to be a good thing as the Young Adult genre becomes flooded with paranormal romances. Way to make YA suck less, John Green.8

An Abundance of Katherines ranks at No. 22. Others include The Fault in Our Stars (No. 4), Looking For Alaska (No. 9),   Paper Towns (No. 20), and Will Grayson, Will Grayson (No. 34).
I tested out of my college math requirement and haven't looked back.

Yes, I did just cite the book in MLA format.
5 For more Q&A in this internet world, John Green set up a tumblr specifically for questions pertaining to An Abundance of Katherines
Though I am putting off reading The Fault in Our Stars because I can tell that book will make me weep like a baby. I am not prepared for that yet.
7 Ranked at No. 16 on NPR's Best YA Novel poll.

8 DFTBA.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 13

Another Monday in front of the work bathroom mirror. Fun fact: that shirt is a hand-me-down. I always look for opportunities to add more purple to my wardrobe.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 12

On the 12th day last year is when I first doubted doing this. I thought, "Why do I have to wear purple again? This is pointless. I am putting too much thought and effort into what I wear everyday this month. No one even cares." Well, most of that is still true today. But I'm not at the same point of desperation this month, thanks in part to the extra purple I purchased throughout the year.

Today was another lazy Sunday as I watched Olympics, crafted, and cleaned. What I love most about these hermit days is that I don't have to match. I just throw on some purple and whatever pair of shorts I can find first. No one can do anything about it! You can also try to paint the Olympic rings (all purple of course) on your cheek and fail miserably and people STILL can't do anything about it. Without further ado, here is my giant head and some purple shirt.

Watching: London 2012 Olympics

Ahhh, the Olympics. Just one of many reasons why even numbered years are the best. I have been on an Olympics high for the past 17 days. I haven't changed the channel on my tv since the opening ceremony. (Well, I only have like 10 channels, but that is not the point here). Moral: I love the Olympics very much and am glad we carry on this tradition.

As each Olympics goes on, I get more and more involved with the action. This year, I begged my mom to let me borrow her login information so I could watch it online. Each day I watched the obscure sports like canoe slalom or racewalking or highly publicized matches like women's gymnastics and swimming in the background while I worked. Once I got home, the tv would be on the primetime broadcast 8pm-12am each night. Oh boy, I cannot tell you how many times I overslept or was a groggy zombie in the morning. (Actually I can. It was everyday.)

Aubergine August 2012: Day 11

Today I adventured to Marshall's and tried on some dresses. I know one of them isn't purple but I couldn't help myself. I absolutely love Calvin Klein dresses. Anyway, I bought the second dress in anticipation of work orientations later this month and volunteering at work events in September. So this is just a glimpse of a future post.

And this is me goofing off in my real Aubergine August outfit for the day. This is my absolute favorite shirt ever. I own three of them in purple, navy blue, and evergreen. I regret nothing. If I could, I would buy all of the colors and only wear them every day for the rest of my life. For real. I'll probably try to sneak this shirt back in later this month.

First Impressions: Go On

Tonight I thought I might be able to go to sleep an hour earlier with the Olympic coverage ending at 11pm. Nope! NBC decided to air the first episode of the heavily promoted Matthew Perry vehicle Go On. I hadn't planned on watching it, but I was too involved in my cross-stitch to move so I stuck around as any tv-obsessed individual would.

What struck me (and many others as far as I can tell from other reviews) is how similar Go On is to another NBC comedy, Community. Self-obsessed leading man - check. Group of wacky misfits - check. Leading man realizing that he needs these wacky people in his life - check. The only difference is the tonal change that being a therapy group brings to the story as opposed to a study group. There wasn't much chance to actually get to know anyone besides Matthew Perry's character Ryan King. Do I remember any of the other character's names? Nope. Lauren Benanti and Tyler James Williams appear to be the second fiddles in this show with bonus John Cho.

The "March Sadness" device was okay at introducing us to the others in the group. But it really only gave us the tiniest glimpse at why they are at the Transitions group therapy.

In the end, I wasn't too impressed with Go On (or how I like to call it Goon). There were dated references, for example who doesn't know about Google Street view? All the funniest parts of the pilot have been put into the endless commercials during the Olympics. Looking forward, I don't know how they'll continue with doing vs. talking about feelings vibe it has set up.

Will it always be the group leader (Lauren Benanti's character whose name I have forgotten) trying to lead them in very textbook, therapy sessions with Ryan King (Matthew Perry) interjecting with a "better" idea of just doing something? If so, it will get boring very fast. They've taken a risk to create a show that could have a large dose of crazy situations with an equally large side of emotional gravitas as characters deal with loss. Making it work will quite the balancing act. I worry that if they had to pick between the two, they will cast aside or belittle the emotional in favor of the comedy, which would be a shame. Go On  doesn't offer anything new in situational comedy. It's the raw emotions that it could tap into that set it apart from other shows.

Will I watch it in the fall?
Probably not. I'll keep an eye out on reviews of other early episodes to see how this show progresses. I just wasn't sold by this Matthew Perry show, which is unfortunate for him because he cannot get a show running. I feel bad and wish you the best Matthew Perry. But in all honesty, I wasn't sold by the Community pilot when I first watched it. Community truly won me over when it started being its silly, referencial self and as I got to know the characters. So there might be hope (should this show not be canceled in the first few weeks) that I will watch it.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 3

I just want to wade into some water when I wear this outfit. The stripes are vaguely nautical.

  1. Purple shirt with stripes
  2. Purple Converse
Also get used to this background. My office's bathroom has the best lighting and full-length mirror around.

Aubergine August 2012: Day 1

Kicking things off with head-to-toe purple. Well sort of head-to-toe.
  1. Purple headband
  2. Purple shirt
  3. Purple Converse
Still learning how to take mirror photos and not look awkward.

Oh my, what stylish shoes you have.

2nd Annual Aubergine August

What is Aubergine August?
Au-ber-gine /ˈōbərˌZHēn/ is just a fancy word for purple. The plan is to wear purple for the entire month of August

Did you lose a bet or something? Why are you doing this?
No, I did not lose a bet. This is winning because purple is amazing color. Just saying.

I chose to do this of my own free will. As legend has it, when I was in the 1st grade I was very particular about my outfits I would not leave the house without wearing some form of purple. And as I saw it, the more purple, the better. I submit into evidence exhibit A: my 1st grade school photo in which I am decked out in purple and rocking a purple background as well.

Precious purple photo- 1st grade Liz

Last year in my post-college boredom, I decided to challenge myself I wondered if I could do it again giving the large quantity of purple already in my wardrobe. Would anyone notice?

Well I did it! I made it through one month of purple every day. Unfortunately I didn't document my first endeavor But that changes this year I'll be taking photos every day and posting them here.

Are there any rules?
There's really only one rule - wear purple every day. And it must be visible and noticeable. Outfits can be repeated, but variation is encouraged.

What if you don't wear purple?
Nothing really. I've been toying with the idea of punishments for noncompliance. Nothing extreme of course. More along the lines of the punishments the vlogbrothers John and Hank Green have for their videos like the cinnamon challenge or something embarrassing. Hopefuly I won't disobey the rules and need to create these purple punishments in the first place.
